Welcome to the new El Dorado High School GATE webpage!  We are hoping this page, along with its links, will help GATE students and their parents stay up-to-date on offerings for GATE students at EDHS, in the local community, and beyond.  Please use this page as a resource in making choices about class registration, community involvement, and courses/opportunities in the greater Sacramento region and beyond.

You can now follow one of our links to a flow chart that lists the Advanced Placement courses offered at EDHS.  At the high school level, GATE classes do not exist in the same format that you might have grown used to in elementary or even middle schools; that is, we do not offer dedicated GATE classes.  Instead, at the high school, students self-select courses that are of interest and that will challenge them in the disciplines in which they have the most ability and/or interest.

Consequently, part of our GATE budget every year goes toward broadening and deepening the background and preparation of our teachers of advanced and AP classes in the form of fees for seminars and training workshops.  GATE also supports these classes by purchasing supplemental texts and materials such as a Spanish magazine for AP Spanish and AP test preparation handbooks for AP Environmental Science.

This year and in future years, however, we are excited about extending more of the GATE funding to activities in which students are directly involved.  These will include, but are not limited to, Academic Decathlon, Math Steeplechase, Speech and Debate, theater productions, a college tour, and speakers on campus.  Sadly, GATE field trips at the high school level are difficult due to the number of GATE students we serve (over 200!) and the prohibitive cost of bus transportation.  We will, however, look at the possibility of arranging trips on a sign-up basis if we can coordinate parent drivers, or if we can use GATE funds to sponsor part of the trip cost, with students and their families meeting the remainder of the costs.

When you have the time, take a look at the Career Center’s webpage.  The Career Center is an excellent resource for students who wish to know more about career paths, colleges, the military, and scholarships and contests of all kinds.  Many EDHS students in prior years have won thousands of dollars in scholarships and prizes, all due to following up on leads from the Career Center.  Do check it out!

Please contact me with questions, concerns, and especially with ideas for GATE and the webpage.  I’m particularly interested in getting information from students and parents on workshops, classes, seminars, summer opportunities, etc., to put on our link so that we can offer an ongoing, updated list of off-campus opportunities of all kinds for our students.

Sincerely,
