EL DORADO HIGH SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT STUDENT EDUCATION DEPARTMENT STUDENT GUIDE AND GRADING POLICY
DEAR STUDENTS AND PARENTS,
The Physical Education Student Guide is designed to familiarize you with our Physical Education Program and answer any questions you may have. Ultimately we hope to enhance your life by providing you with the opportunity to participate in a comprehensive, sequential program that promotes physical, mental, emotional and social well being. We will give you the chance to participate in many different forms of physical activity, to learn to value physical fitness, and to understand both are ultimately related to health and well being. As a student in high school, you will find participation in physical activities worthwhile. Please read this guide carefully, sign the tear-off section, and return in to your Physical Education instructor.
EARNING CREDIT IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION
A student must earn twenty credits of physical education in order to graduate. P.E. 1 is for freshman. P.E. 2 is for tenth, eleventh, or twelfth graders. Success in either program requires daily attendance, with full participation to the best of ones ability, and completion of written work. Any missed days or work must be made up.
P.E. 1 GUIDELINES
1. All ninth grade students must be enrolled.
2. Students will participate in these components.

P.E. 2 GUIDELINES
1. Any tenth, eleventh, or twelfth grader may be enrolled.
2. Students must participate in three of the six components
The components are:
1. Effects of Physical Activity on Dynamic Health
2. Biomechanical Principles of Human Movement
3. Dance and Rhythms
4. Individual Games and Sports
5. Team Sports
6. Outdoor Education
3. Students must complete P.E. 1 before enrolling in P.E. 2.
Students may take Elective P.E. with teacher's permission.
4. Students who fail one or both semesters of P.E. 1 will be reenrolled in the corresponding semester of their sophomore year. Students repeating P.E. 1 will be allowed to enroll in P.E. 2 concurrently.GRADING POLICY
90%-100% = A
80%-89.9% = B
70%-79.9% = C
60%-69.9% = D
59% AND BELOW = F
During the unit 70% of the points come from daily participation that includes a daily run, stretching and skill activity etc.
Students can earn up to 3 points per day. 5 points on block day.
The other 30% of the grade come from written work and skill related tests.
Examples.
1. Essay-Students are required to write one essay per unit dealing with nutrition, health or fitness.
2. Mile and Half Chart-Students are required to record their weekly timed runs on a bar graph and present this at the end of the unit.
3. Unit worksheet-Students are given rules and strategies concerning their specific unit.
4. Skill Tests-Students are given skill test dealing with their specific unit.
5. Written Exams-Students are given test based on the handouts and unit worksheets.
6. Physical Fitness Tests-Students are given these twice per year and the teacher has the option as counting them as a skill test.
P.E. 1 all four units during the semester are averaged for the final semester mark.
P.E. 2 all four units during the semester are averaged plus a district final weighed 10% of the grade is combined for the final semester mark.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION MAKE-UPS
A student who misses a Physical Education period because of an excused absence has the privilege of making up that period. A student receives no points unless the day is made up. A student who is suspended, unexcused, or a non-suit must have teacher approval. A student who cuts class does not have any make-up privileges. Perfect attendance each unit equals a make up day.
HOME MAKE-UPS-parent not for 45 minutes of physical activity in activities such as jogging, aerobics, bicycling, swimming, etc. are acceptable. These are limited to only one per unit and four per semester.
ON CAMPUS MAKE-UPS-Physical Education teacher note for 45 minutes of physical activity such as jogging, weight lifting, swimming, etc. before, during, or after school. Four per unit are accepted.
OFF CAMPUS MAKE-UPS-A signed receipt for racquetball, a bowling score sheet, and/or a ski lift ticket are acceptable. A photo ID must be presented and your name written on these receipts. Four per unit are accepted.
Athletic Team Make-ups-Athletic practice and contests can be used as make-ups during the season only. Four per unit. This can be used only for excused absences. Students must bring in note from their coach each unit.
A TOTAL OF 16 DAYS IS THE MAXIMUM ALLOWANCE FOR MAKE-UPS PER SEMESTER FOUR PER UNIT.
Appropriate Dress for Physical Education Class.
The following clothing is acceptable for participation in physical education.
1. Solid blue soccer style athletic shorts with an elastic waistband, or rugby style El Dorado Cougar shorts, or solid blue fleece shorts.
2. Plain white T-shirts or El Dorado logo T-shirt. White T-shirts with other logos MAY NOT BE TURNED INSIDE OUT.
3. White socks. Stripes on top are okay.
4. Rubber-soled athletic shoes. (NO SLIP-ONS, TOP SIDERS OR SANDALS)
5. Long sweat pants and sweat shirts, of any color are optional. NO LONG UNDERWEAR! SWEAT CLOTHES SHOULD BE MARKED.
6. Hats, acceptable for school, are allowed during outdoor sports.
7. All clothing must be clearly marked with the student's last name and first initial. T-shirts must be clearly marked on the left front shoulder and across the upper back. Shorts and sweat pants should be clearly marked on the left front leg.
8. Students who are dressed out for class but are wearing and inappropriate uniform will be given a uniform violation. Students with a uniform violation earn only two points. Two uniform violations in a row equal one non-suit, which reduces their grade by 3 points.
9. Students who are unable to provide a T-shirt, or gym shorts should contact their instructor who will help them obtain acceptable clothing.
DISCIPLINE RULES AND PROCEDURES
We believe all students can and will behave appropriately in our physical education classes.
Students will be at roll call on time, appropriately dresses, and ready to learn and meet the daily class objective. Students have 5 minutes to get dresses and be at roll call. Tardy students earn only 2 points. At the end of the period they have 10 minutes to get to the locker room, shower and get dressed in their street clothes.
Students will be courteous to others and not use profane language.
If a student chooses to break a rule or not to cooperate:
1st consequence: warning and participation grade lowered (low effort 2 points earned)
2nd consequence: referral to Vice Principal (-3 points earned)
If a student chooses not to dress for class:
1st consequence: non-suit recorded and (-3 pts earned)
2nd consequence: non-suit recorded and (-3 pts earned)
3rd consequence: parent notified and (-3 pts earned)
4th consequence: detention assigned and (-3 pts earned)
Detention will be assigned every 3rd non-suit after the 4th.
ALL NON-SUITS CARRY a –3 POINT PENALTY.
METICAL EXCUSES
1. A parent note dated with a telephone number where the parent can be reached during the day must be given to the physical education teacher the day of the illness NO RETROACTIVE NOTES. This will excuse that student for up to three days. A medical assignment or modified activity will be given to earn credit for that period. Students may be assigned a writing assignment in the library during that period in order to receive credit.
2. After being excused for three consecutive days by a parent's note, a doctor's note must be given to allow any more excused days. This note will be kept on file. Students will continue the writing assignments in the library during that period in order to receive credit.
3. Students requiring limited physical education activities due medical reasons will be assigned to modified Physical Education when at all possible.
LOCKS AND LOCKERS
1. Students must provide their own combination lock. Key locks will not be allowed because the keys get lost. Any key locks will be removed. All locks must have students ID number engraved on them. The P.E. Staff will engrave student's locks. Students who lose their lock must have the new one engraved. Lost and found locks are in the P.E. offices.
2. Freshman will be issued a locker for the school locker for the year. They are to use the small white lockers. Frosh athletes will be issued a large locker for their season of sport.
3. Do not share your locker, lock or combination with anyone.
4. Double check your lock and do not keep valuables in your locker.
5. Be aware that the locker rooms are used by visiting sports teams, as well as the community after school hours.
LOCKER ROOM POLICIES
1. NO GUM OR FOOD PERMITTED IN CLASS. Clean up your trash in the locker room. No glass bottles of any kind are permitted.
2. Use back doors when returning from swimming class..
3. Enter the teacher's office only after knocking and receiving permission.
4. No one is allowed in the locker room when classes are in session.
5. When a student comes to class with a late pass, he/she should be dressed in P.E. clothes and then bring pass to their teacher.
6. Check lost and found in the locker room for lost or misplaced P.E. clothes.
